Precision Development (PxD) had the honor of participating in the official launch of Ethiopia’s Digital Agriculture Roadmap (DAR) on February 4th, 2025, in partnership with the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), the Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, the Gates Foundation, and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

This roadmap is a landmark achievement, charting an exciting path for Ethiopia to make significant investments in digital agriculture in 2025-2032 to drive agricultural transformation and improve the lives and livelihoods of the tens of millions of smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of the very few countries in Africa that has developed a comprehensive and coordinated roadmap to guide investments in digital agriculture. The roadmap highlights several high-priority digital agriculture use cases, including digital agricultural extension, timely interventions to help farmers respond to pest and disease outbreaks and weather shocks, access to credit and insurance, input procurement and distribution, input tracking, and access to markets. In parallel, the roadmap also highlights investments in several foundational components of Ethiopia’s digital ecosystem and enabling environment, including a data stack, unique farmer IDs, digital literacy, data policies and governance, digital kiosks, and a dedicated Digital Agriculture Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture to implement the roadmap.

In attendance at this launch event in Addis Ababa were PxD’s Ethiopia Country Director Freyhiwot Nadew, Ethiopia Director of Programs Habtamu Yesigat, and Chief Strategy Officer Jonathan Lehe, who joined a panel discussion on “Transforming Ethiopia’s Agricultural Ecosystem through Digital Solutions.”

While a huge amount of work has already gone into developing this roadmap as a vision for digital agriculture in Ethiopia, the hard work begins now to translate this vision into action. PxD is committed to continuing to support the Ministry of Agriculture and ATI over the next several years to implement its vision to deliver real impact for tens of millions of farmers in Ethiopia.
